A Retreat Woven Into History
The Legacy of Caroleen Mill Village
Long before Wallace Haven welcomed guests seeking connection, relaxation, and nature, this land was part of one of the most important textile communities in western North Carolina.
Our property sits in the heart of Caroleen Mill Village, a historic company town established in the late 1800s along the banks of the Second Broad River.
Caroleen was built to support the Caroleen Cotton Mill, one of the earliest textile operations in Rutherford County. Like many Southern mill villages of the era, the community was carefully planned around the mill itself. Workers and their families lived in company houses, attended local churches and schools, and built a close-knit community centered on the rhythms of mill life.
The Caroleen Cotton Mill
The Caroleen Cotton Mill, established in 1887, helped transform this rural area into a thriving industrial village. Powered by the nearby river and supported by rail access, the mill produced cotton yarn and textiles that were shipped throughout the region and beyond.
Caroleen became one of several mill communities along the Second Broad River corridor, joining nearby villages such as:
- Spindale
- Forest City
- Ruth
- Henrietta
- Avondale
- Cliffside
Together these communities formed a textile corridor that helped define Rutherford County’s economic and cultural identity for generations.
Although the mills eventually closed as the textile industry shifted overseas, the villages they created remain an important part of the region’s heritage.
The Superintendent’s House
A Home at the Center of the Village
The historic home that now anchors Wallace Haven once served as the Superintendent’s House for the Caroleen Mill Village.
In mill communities like Caroleen, the superintendent was responsible for overseeing mill operations and managing the workforce. The superintendent’s residence was typically one of the most prominent homes in the village, reflecting both leadership and responsibility within the community.
Our home, believed to have been built around 1900, overlooks the village and the river valley beyond. With its distinctive architecture and historic character, it served as a central gathering place during the height of Caroleen’s textile era.
Today, many of the architectural details and original charm of the home remain, providing a direct connection to the past.
Preserving a Piece of History
When we began restoring the property, our goal was not only to create a welcoming retreat but also to honor the history of Caroleen and the mill village that once thrived here.
By preserving the Superintendent’s House and sharing the story of the Caroleen Mill, we hope to keep this important chapter of local history alive.
Guests staying at Wallace Haven are invited to explore the surrounding area, where traces of the region’s textile heritage can still be seen in historic mill buildings, worker cottages, and nearby mill villages along the river.
A New Chapter
Today, the property has entered a new era.
What was once the superintendent’s residence now serves as the heart of Wallace Haven, a place where guests can relax, reconnect with nature, and build community in a setting rich with history.
Just as the mill village once brought people together, our retreat continues that tradition in a new way — welcoming visitors to experience the beauty, heritage, and spirit of Caroleen.
